The primary function of the Application Engineer is to assist customers with the application of Automation and Control products (PLCs, HMIs, Variable Frequency Drives, cobots, safety, sensing, etc...).  The position will be based in the Virtual Demonstration Lab at our Ft Worth, Texas facility.  This unique position will support our customers remotely through the use of video conferencing.  The application engineer will work with the customer & sales team to define the customer’s application needs, and then create & host a custom demonstration for the customer.  This could include demonstrating how a single component configures & operates, discussing a system of components, or providing an overview of the programming packages for the components.  Customers include industrial manufacturing plants, machine builders, & system integrators.


Key Responsibilities

  •  Customer applications & support
    • Work with the customer, sales teams, & Field Application Engineers, to understand the customer’s application.  Assist with defining potential solutions.  Determine whether the customer needs assistance with understanding how to install, configure, or program the components/system.  
    • Setup & host custom virtual demonstrations for customers.  Work with the Lab Technician to configure & wire demo racks, develop sample programs, and configure the cameras & lighting.  Host the customer demonstration with an emphasis on providing an outstanding customer experience & a passion for solving their challenges.  
    • Influence customers by establishing mastery of their requirements and have the customer develop a comfort level in the Application Engineer’s capabilities.
    • Work closely with the North American sales teams on opportunities & account management.  Document sales activity in Allied’s CRM system
    • Provide answers to technical support questions that were escalated to Level 3.
  • Supplier & sales strategy
    • Work with sales leaders & product management staff to successfully execute company growth strategies
    • Develop close working relationships with key suppliers, define action plans, and ensure alignment with products featured in the lab.  
    • Promote & demonstrate our support capabilities to current & potential suppliers.
  • Demo hardware & software 
    • Assist with defining the roadmap & timeline for both the evolution of the lab and the products featured within the lab.
    • Create new product demos including CAD schematics, mounting, wiring, startup, & programming.  Lead the creation of flyers & videos to promote the new demos.
    • Assist with continuous improvement of lab operations.
  • Thought leadership content
    • Collaborate with marketing on the creation of technical content including articles, videos, blogs, social posts, etc.
    • Stay abreast of key industry trends.
    • Participate in key industry associations.
  • Training
    • Participate in a training & development program, including basic and advanced supplier training.  
    • Develop a mastery of how to setup, operate, & program a broad range of automation & control products from our key brands.
    • Collaborate with Training leaders on education plans for the sales teams & technical support personnel.  
    • Develop & host internal training sessions.
    • Host customer training sessions & webinars.
  • Job will require overnight travel up to 15% of time for training and meetings.


Essential Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Distribution
  • 5+ years hands-on application experience with related industry suppliers and/or distribution application engineering experience.
  • Experience with industrial manufacturing facilities, machine building OEMs, system integrators, & panel builders
  • Ability to program PLCs in Ladder Logic & Structured Text  
  • Ability to program HMIs
  • Ability to configure & startup variable frequency drives
  • Experienced with intelligent networked devices including sensors, contactors, etc
  • Ability to read & draw electrical & mechanical schematics.  Aptitude for designing, fabricating, assembling, wiring, & debugging electro-mechanical systems.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, verbal communication
  • Excellent customer-facing & presentation skills, including the use of visual media
  • Passionate about helping customers find solutions to their challenges
  • Experience in creating & hosting technical training courses
  • Demonstrate creative thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work in an industrial environment. 
  • Strong knowledge of electrical safety practices
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications


Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience with programming PLCs, HMIs, & Variable Frequency Drives from suppliers in Allied’s line card 
  • 3+ years application engineering experience with key suppliers matching Allied’s line card (control products, sensing, safety, networking, etc.)
  • Experience as either an application engineer for a distributor/manufacturer or as a controls engineer for an OEM, system integrator, or end-user.
  • Ability to draw 2D electrical schematics as well as 2D/3D mechanical components in AutoCAD & SolidWorks
  • Experience in multiple market segments (food & beverage, automotive, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, etc)
