Summary of the role

To lead the development and execution of a group-wide strategy on bringing external innovation into EC group.  You will lead the development of pilot propositions and partnerships that could expand into new business models and markets for EC group, working with internal and external teams to research opportunities and develop proposals that may include future M&A recommendations.

Responsibilities will also include the sourcing and management of external funding from third-party sources, potential investments into third-parties, and programme management of pilot propositions including testing with customers, suppliers and internal stakeholders. Alongside this you will provide expertise and inputs into new proof of concept tests being run by the function in order to establish a full pipeline of innovation projects that can be developed into future business models and revenue streams for EC group.

What you will do

  • Create and evolve the group strategy for how we engage with open innovation platforms, incubators and start-ups
  • Identify and qualify the potential behind new opportunities for EC group to establish new business model pilots in markets we don’t currently play in
  • Manage a network of companies and resources that may become partners in future projects, including their onboarding and participation in specific projects where and when appropriate
  • Develop and manage a pipeline of future state funded R&D projects that would be applicable to EC group innovation initiatives
  • Make recommendations on investments into start-ups including exit and return scenarios
  • Propose and shape funded applications through program and partner management across the project lifetime
  • Manage and influence key stakeholder management to achieve buy-in to recommendations
  • Support existing Innovation projects utilizing the network of partners and external research to add value and insight to initiative developments
  • Bring external expertise and experience from third parties into the innovation team and wider business to influence future group strategic direction
  • Drive employee engagement across Innovation teams and within the wider business


Scope of the Role

  • This is a global role directly reporting to the Regional President, Americas with a dotted reporting line to SVP Innovation
  • It will work with stakeholders from across the business up to the most senior level
  • It will manage operational and capex budgets worth £’xm’s within the scope of projects
  • It will be charged with delivering up to £50m value by 2025, and >£100m value by 2030
  • There will be direct and indirect management of resources and people in the remit of the role

What you will bring


  • Previous leadership experience in an innovation role working external innovation companies, preferably as part of an engineering, distribution or technology business
  • Track record of leading the successful delivery of R&D / new innovation projects
  • Commercial background that demonstrates the evaluation opportunities and making reasoned recommendations based on likelihood of commercial success
  • Experience in working with third parties including public-sector / governmental agencies to realise project funding
  • Understanding of the problems faced in working with state bodies, and able to find solutions for those problems
  • Experience of working with start-ups and small businesses, and able to adapt project needs accordingly
  • Project management experience in developing and delivering innovation solutions
  • Demonstrates good understanding of different target audiences (internal, external, customer types, contact types)
  • Strong communications background, able to develop key messages that land with target audiences
  • Open and curious mindset that enables the role-holder to think beyond current process restrictions and develop new ways of working to deliver
  • High quality relationship-building skills with people from different backgrounds and outlooks
